New work, “CALIFORNIA CITY” from Photographer, ELLIE PRITTS
California City is a “failed city” occupying over 200 sq miles of land in the Mojave Desert. Its founder, Nat Mendelsohn, purchased the land in the late 1950’s intending to build a city that would rival Los Angeles. Most of what remains is vast, surreal tracks of land with streets and street signs but no houses.
There are about 14,000 people who live in the developed part of the city today, at least one of which swears California City is the best stargazing spot around. So I headed there to catch golden hour and a glimpse of the night sky. I was not disappointed!
